Child First Aid for Professionals
This course has been designed for Primary School Teachers and Early Childhood Educators to build confidence in managing child-specific first aid emergencies. This course offers unit standards and meets the requirements of the Ministry of Education.
- Recommended for people who work with children aged 0 - 8, or anyone looking for comprehensive child first aid training
- Meets the minimum qualification for workplace first aiders
- Eligible for NZQA unit standard 6402, 6401

- Upon completion, receive a Child First Aid certificate valid for two years.

This 1-day assessed course focuses on child and infant specific first aid only. By the end of this course, you will have the confidence to:
- Provide basic life support, including CPR and defibrillation
- Manage a foreign body airway obstruction
- Manage a life-threatening bleed, including when to use an arterial tournequet
- Manage a child or infant in shock
- Recognise and provide first aid treatment for common trauma and medical conditions.
Unit standard 6402: Provide basic life support, including:
- DRSABCD action plan
- CPR (children, infants)
- Defibrillator (AED) use
- Choking (children, infants)
- Life-threatening bleeding, including when to use an arterial tourniquet
- Shock
Unit standard 6401: Provide first aid, including:
- Health literacy
- Fractures and dislocations
- Burns
- Soft tissue injuries
- Poisoning
- Breathing difficulties - asthma, croup, bronchiolitis
- Diabetic emergencies
- Seizure
- Chest pain
- Stroke
- Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis)
Attendees must be:
- 14 years or older
- Able to kneel on the floor to do CPR for a minimum of two minutes
- Able to complete assessments in English (practical, written and verbal assessments are used in this course)
