Caring for Kids: Essential First Aid Skills
This practical 3-hour session has been designed with parents and caregivers in mind, focusing on key life-saving skills without the pressure of formal assessments. It provides clear, practical guidance on recognising and responding to the most common medical conditions and injuries in children and infants.
- Recommended for parents/caregivers/whānau/babysitters of young children who are looking to improve their confidence in first aid skills
- Upon completion, receive a certificate, valid for 2 years
- No formal assessments
- No NZQA unit standards

This 3-hour course is designed to be practical and interactive, with plenty of hands-on learning. Learners leave with new knowledge and the confidence to use their skills in real-life situations when it matters most.

Recognise and provide first aid for:
- DRSABCD action plan
- CPR (children and infants)
- Defibrillator (AED) use
- Choking (children and infants)
- Causes of fever, including vomiting and meningococcal disease
- Febrile seizures
- Breathing difficulties, including asthma, croup, and bronchiolitis
- Severe allergic reactions, and how to use an EpiPen
- Poisoning
- Injuries, including head injuries, fractures and dislocations, bleeding management, and burns.
Who can attend this course?
- Learners aged 14 years or above may enrol independently
- Learners aged 10-13 years may attend if accompanied by a parent/guardian who is also enrolled.
- Both the parent/guardian and the 10-13-year-old must pay the course fee. These younger learners can also receive a certificate.
- Children under 10 years old (including infants) cannot be accommodated
- To fully participate, learners should feel comfortable reading and communicating in English.
