Our e-learning course is designed to empower those responsible for the well-being of intoxicated people to manage them effectively and ensure a safer environment.

  • This e-learning course supports managers to meet their obligations under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015
  • The content has been designed in collaboration with the New Zealand Drug Foundation, Whakarongorau, and New Zealand Police adult sexual harm team
  • This course is recommended for those 16 years or above
  • Introduction to signs and symptoms and how you, as the first aider, can help recognise and treat the basics, to life-threatening medical emergencies
  • We also offer an online First Aid course and online Mental Health First Aid course

This 4-hour e-learning course is ideal for people who wish to improve their confidence in identifying and managing an intoxicated person. The in-depth modules and activities will gain you:

  • An awareness of vulnerability in the context of intoxication
  • An understanding of how to keep intoxicated people safe from harm
  • Some common first aid skills that will help you manage intoxicated people
  •  An understanding of when to seek further help or support

Course Content

This course will provide knowledge and skills for those who encounter individuals that have consumed alcohol, experiencing adverse effects from a substance, or have taken a combination of substances and now require assistance.

The learning objectives for this e-learning course are:

  • Identify the signs, symptoms and stages of intoxication
  • Identify the three classes of drugs and their effects
  • Identify when/how intoxication can make people vulnerable
  • Identify intervention tools to prevent further harm
  • Identify common first aid skills to manage intoxicated people
  • Describe DRSABCD to assess and manage an unresponsive person
  • Identify the key principles of CPR and defibrillation
  • Identify when medical attention or further support is required and what other help is available.
Prerequisites & requirements

This course is recommended for those 16 years or older.

You do not need any prior training or experience to complete this course.

  • This e-learning course contains no formal assessments and does not meet NZQA requirements to refresh your first aid certificate
